Bringing a healthy, well‑bred Wheaten puppy into the world isn’t simple — and it certainly isn’t inexpensive. Responsible breeders invest enormous amounts of time, money, and heart long before a puppy ever goes home. Here’s what really goes into it and our puppy costs at the end!

✈️ Stud Fees & Breeding Costs
Sometimes the perfect match isn’t local. Flying in semen or paying a stud fee is costly — and even then, there’s no guarantee of a pregnancy or a big litter. There’s also time and much thought spent on matching a sire and dam for the advancement of the breed. A responsible, conservation breeder’s goal is to cultivate and foster the breed by targeted breeding. As we’ve said on our home page, we breed for health, temperament and conservation.
🧪 Progesterone Testing
If breeding locally, the female often needs multiple progesterone tests to pinpoint the exact fertile window. These visits add up quickly, but they’re essential for timing and success.
🌼 Pregnancy Care & Preparing for Puppies
Pregnancy is an exciting time, and breeders do a lot behind the scenes to make sure mom and her puppies stay healthy. Many choose to confirm pregnancy with an ultrasound, get an estimated due date, and check on how the puppies are developing. These visits help catch any potential issues early and give everyone the best chance for a smooth delivery.
🐶 Whelping & Emergency Care
Most births go smoothly… but not always. A breeder must be ready for a middle‑of‑the‑night dash to the vet for a c‑section, which costs thousands. It can be stressful, unpredictable and part of the responsibility of doing things the right way.
🍼 Newborn Puppy Care
Once the puppies arrive, the real work begins. A good breeder watches the litter constantly to be sure everyone is nursing, gaining weight, and thriving. If mom needs help or a puppy is small, individual feedings are done by the breeder.
😴 Sleepless Nights & Endless Laundry
Puppies mean round‑the‑clock care, mountains of laundry, constant cleaning, sanitizing and bedding changes. It’s a full‑time job for weeks.
🩺 Puppy Vet Visits & Health Certificates
Every puppy gets a full vet check, initial vaccinations, and a health certificate before going home.
📛 Microchipping & AKC Registration
Most reputable breeders handle microchipping and AKC registration so your puppy is properly identified and officially recorded.
💬 Lifetime Support
A responsible breeder wants to stay in touch with you, the new owner. They love getting updates and photos of how you are doing and are available for mentoring, advice and encouragement. When the big day comes and you get your new puppy, you’ll have a healthy puppy, bred for temperament, personality as well as conformity to the breed. You’ll get a supply of food they’re used to, an agreement both of you will sign, their paperwork for AKC registration, microschip information, vaccinations and your breeder’s number to call with any questions you may have.
